Iron transfussion

JUNE 2018

Sunday I ventured into hospital for an iron transfusion.

My iron levels (well ferritin) have been particular low for the last few years, I’ve suffered with anaemia on and off following an ectopic pregnancy and never really recovered from it.

Having researched personally that my iron levels have a direct impact on my skin, hair and nails I have always taken an iron supplement. But sadly this doesn’t always increase the levels as much as I need.

I had to ask my dermatologist if he thought an infusion would help – he looked at my blood results over the years, agreed and said it would be very beneficial and booked me in. Till this day I wouldn’t have had it if I hadn’t have suggested it… who’s the doctor here?

The transfusion was administered via an IV into my arm, same place blood is drawn for a blood test.

The infusion took one hour in total. I had 500mg of iron.

I’ve been told it takes 1-3 weeks to be absorbed so I’ll keep you posted how that goes.

I was totally fine on the day I had it done , the next day I had a tummy ache and was very sleepy. Today I’ve felt a little nauseous but not too bad. I’ll let you know on any changes going forward! 🙂

Day 3 ....

......after my iron transfusion and I’ve experienced a number of averse affects.

Yesterday I developed some gastric issues, feeling sick, bad stomach cramps etc.

Started to get some chest pains and extremely fatigued I’m in bed so early… sleeping on settee when I get in at 6 which is unheard of for me.

Woke this morning with intense calf cramps too.

I hope his doesn’t last long! When does it kick in so I can feel better?

Day 4....

Oh my god! Day 3…4 I don’t know but I do know I’m so tired I feel like I’ve had the life sucked out of me.

Iron deficient fatigue is not something I wish to experience much longer, you cannot say you have been tired until you experience this !

I honestly feel like sleeping anywhere. Housework has been impossible, walking is difficult, I can’t even talk without getting tired.

The gastric issues are still present too so I’m off food!

And the cramp… I just can’t cope with it!

Is my hair great back yet…

I hope this goes soon…

Day 7....

Well Im feeling a lot better now, I think the iron is making its way through my body and is starting to Make an impact! Thank goodness! My energy has picked up too which is a welcome feeling! Now to watch the hair - 3 months to wait though ...
